Bendeela Reserve

Free Camping - New South Wales

Bendeela is a popular free camping and recreation area, about 150 kilometres south of Sydney. With its wide open spaces and lush setting on the banks of the Kangaroo River, it’s the perfect spot to relax and get back to nature. Popular activities include swimming, canoeing and fishing.

Note: This picnic area maybe closed during times of flooding or access to Lake Yarrunga is restricted when Tallowa Dam is spilling.

To access:  From Sydney, follow the Hume Highway (F5) south towards Goulburn and take the Mittagong to Bowral turnoff. Take the Nowra Road towards Kangaroo Valley. As you approach Kangaroo Valley, just before Hampden Bridge turn right onto Bendeela Road and travel about seven kilometres to the camping grounds.  It has a very steep access into the camp area.

Nice place, but no seats, playground or BBQ as icons indicate.

Excellent camp, clean facilities, but the steep turn in at the gate was a bit scary. My first ever sighting of a live wombat in the wild - and there were dozens of them around the van on dusk and overnight, scratching their rear ends on the steps and tow bar!

Bendeela Reserve near Kangaroo Valley was our first camping night with our new Wedegtail camper which we had picked up in Newcastle. The site was recommended to us by the owner of the Wedgetail campers business. Bendeela is a large, open space alongside the river with plenty of room for rigs of all sizes. As dusk fell just as we had set up, the kangaroos and wombats appeared! The surroundings are beautiful, peaceful and the river is used by canoeists of which there was a very noisy youth group camping in tents that night, with little apparent supervision from their adult companions. A lady with her grandkids in a camper near us said she stayed there often and for the most part it was not noisy and people were usually respectful of the surroundings and other campers. As we were tucked up in bed in our first night camping the whole thing suddenly took on a rhythmic rocking. Hubby checked out the door to see a wombat happily rubbing itself on one of our tyres!

Bendeela Campground has to be right up there with the best free camps for self contained campers around and clearly with the additional toilet block plus new dump point is still improving. Great work, NSW Water, for it's provision and maintenance.

wonderful spot, big grassy areas to camp on. easy acess to the river. $6 booking fee only. Wombats, goannas, geese & ducks....all friendly. Bins & toilets.

Great campground in kangaroo valley with options for canoeing and kayaking along the kangaroo river to tallowa dam. Used to be free but reopened on October 19th 2020 with a $6 booking fee. All bookings to be done on the NSW water website still well worth the cost. Lots of friendly kangaroos and wombats come out to graze at dusk

This is one of the nicest free camps anywhere there are toilets, but no showers, would accomodate a lot of campers with huge grass areas some of which are closed off in non peak times. They have had some problems in the past with unruly campers, but now have full time security again at no cost. Area is right alongside river which is used by canoeists. At dusk wombats come into the camp and at night time often rub themselves under vans. Have stayed here a few times and always enjoy it, came once with grandsons who had a ball.
Booking Fee $6.00
Per site, per night (Max 6 adults)
