The Central Arnhem Road
The notorious Central Arnhem Road stretches some 650 km from the Stuart highway, 55Km south of Katherine, to Nhulunbuy / Gove on the North East corner of the "Top End". It is not a road for the faint hearted and only trafficable for around 7 months of the year from June to December.
The road begins benignly enough with some 60 km of sealed blacktop to the Aboriginal community of Beswick. From Beswick it is dirt and rock for the next 600 odd km. At the 200 km point you reach the Mainoru Store and Mainoru Safari Lodge, the only shopping and fuel stop on the road.
Please Note
Travel past Mainoru requires a permit from the NLC before you depart, travelling with alcohol and/or firearms is strictly prohibited.
