Lake Canellan & Lake Francis Camping

Free Camping - Queensland

Take the track off Barkly Highway and choose your free camping area on either Lake Francis or Lake Canellan.  There are no facilities here.  Some shade is available and the views are quite nice.  Photo buffs will love it here.  Maximum stay is 48 hours

As mentioned by others this is a good place for an overnight stop. It is handy to the town for shopping. Noise from the road is minimal. There are plenty of spots to choose from, all flat and big rigs could get in too.

Lovely place for a stop. When you turn in keep going passed the bins to the second lake as it is the better of the two. Lots of bird life and lilly flowers. First lake near the highway is good for collecting agate type rocks that are good for tumbling. Difficult to hit in tent pegs. Second lake is on black soil so avoid if near the wet season.

Loved the bird life especially the brolgas

A beautiful peaceful spot to rest and do some bird spotting. No facilities, just need to be fully self contained and leave no trace, as usual. Access to Lake Francis, the first lake, is a sound unsealed road, easy for motorhomes and caravans.

We followed the advice of one of the other reviews and drove in past the bins, to the second lake, good suggestion, thank you! Even though it is dry and dusty at this time of year, and this year in particular with so much of this part of the country being in drought, there is still some water in the lake, and still Brolgas to be seen, very special indeed. Lovely peaceful little free camping area.

It rained last night so road in (to the second lake) was a bit soft in places so we turned on our 4WD on our sprinter. Ground now is hardening up nicely I would not bring a front wheel drive Fiat motorhome down here in these conditions.

amazing spot, drive at least 1klms to best spots, lots of bird life, brolgas too. bring wood have a fire. popular spot

This campsite is out of this world. We are on the lakeshore looking over water lilies to brolgas, kites, ducks, pelicans and cormorants. The water is turbid but clean. Cool but deep enough for a swim. I could not help but contrast this site to the bare, expensive and ugly caravan park in town that we used last year. ?? The only thin missing is a dunny.
