Wells Crossing

Free Camping - New South Wales

Wells Crossing is just a short drive from Ashford on the Pindari Dam Road. There is a cleared, flat area atop the bank which is perfect for camping.

The Ashford Lions have built a shelter, placed tables and barbecues here making the place an ideal spot for a picnic.

Wells Crossing is quite a well known fishing hole and has produced some large murray cod and yellowbelly perch, but as the locals will tell you, the biggest ones are still in there.

The river above the bridge at Wells Crossing widens into a long expanse of water that makes an ideal place to explore in a canoe, or launch a fishing boat from the gravel boat ramp located on the opposite side of the bridge. The place has long been a favourite recreational spot for locals, whether swimming at the picnic area or fishing the long stretch of water.

Wells Crossing is located on the Severn River below Pindari Dam. It was named after an incident by an Ashford carrier named Wells who was crossing at this place with a load of wool from an outlying property, around 1900. The brakes failed on his wagon and it tipped over, losing all 37 bales of wool that he was carting, into the river.

This is a very pleasant and peaceful site a few K out of Ashford on a river bank. Facilities are a bit basic but if self contained it is a quiet relaxing spot. Plenty of bird life in the area.

There are defiantly NO toilets here!

Been a couple of years since I was here and was pleasantly surprised by the well maintained condition of the site. There is plenty of room for camping but close to the river obviously gets taken first.

Nice open campsite on bank of river. Shelter shed but no other facilities, so must be self contained. Sign on tank says ‘no toilet no stay’.

This a great spot to stay a few days, there is picnic tables & a shelter with tables in it. The grass is not maintained but it didn't bother us. You need to be self contained as there are no toilets here. Great place to throw a line in. We have been here before & will return again.
