Hunters Gorge Camping Area

Dry weather access only.Diamantina National Park can be reached by heading south from Winton or Boulia, north from Windorah or east from Bedourie. Obtain a Sunmap or RACQ icon map for details. 

A four-wheel-drive vehicle with high clearance is necessary as many outback roads are unsealed and wheel ruts can be deep.Even small amounts of rain can make roads impassable so always be prepared and have at least a week’s worth of extra supplies in case of stranding. Check with Queensland Transport or local council offices for current road conditions before your trip.Remember to carry extra fuel for driving within the park. 

Enjoy spectacular sunsets and abundant birdlife from the banks of the Diamantina River at Hunters Gorge camping area, or relax beside Whistling Duck Creek and enjoy bush camping beneath shady coolibah trees at Gum Hole camping area.Camping permits are required and fees apply. A camping tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Camping area features: open bush camping sites by Mundawerra Waterhole on the Diamantina River. This area is well suited to camper trailers but has few shade trees and is exposed to frequent high winds.

Location: 4 km from the turn-off to Hunters Gorge signed on Springvale Road.

Access: the camping area can only be reached by 4WD and camper trailers and caravans with high clearance.

Number of sites: open area without defined sites.

Camp sites are suitable for: tent camping beside your vehicle; camper trailers. Not suitable for large caravans.

Camp site surface: dirt.

Facilities: pit toilet.

Open fires: prohibited. Fuel stoves are recommended.

Generators: not allowed, except for medical reasons (with NPRSR permission).

Essentials to bring: all food and drinking water, sturdy rubbish bags, insect repellent, sun protection, first aid kit, reliable torch, vehicle spares and sufficient fuel.

Bookings: book online, over-the-counter or by phone. If you have not booked a permit before arriving, self-registration is available at the camping area.

Mobile phone coverage: unavailable; satellite phones and UHF radios recommended.
