BIG4 Castlemaine is a peaceful and private park overlooking a beautiful nature reserve and within walking distance of all that vibrant and eclectic Castlemaine has to offer. There's the famed Mill precinct just across the road, with gourmet food outlets (think artisan ham and sausages, chocolate, breads and wine), Shedshaker Brewery and the splendid Das Kaffeehaus offering Austrian-themed breakfasts and lunches and the all-important coffee made with beans blended and roasted on the premises. There's a vintage bazaar to explore as well as artisan workshops and galleries. To top it off, there's a boutique and a couple of great country pubs in the vicinity.
The centre of Castlemaine is reachable on foot, or is just a few minutes' drive from BIG4. Enjoy the town's history, architecture, multitude of coffee shops and fabulous restaurants, boutiques, and more. Visit the iconic Theatre Royal, which has hosted national and international artists and performers since 1855 and featured "moving pictures" since 1919 as one of the first "picture palaces" in Australia. Catch a current movie, or time your visit to enjoy an arthouse feature or a live music gig by local or touring musicians. Call in to the vast Restorers Barn to browse through architectural hardware or, just a few doors down, Stoneman's BookRoom, which has been delighting Central Victorian booklovers for decades, and which has a great selection of maps and local history books, as well as fiction for all ages. And be sure to stop in at the Market Building and Visitors' Centre for a wealth of information about all that Castlemaine and the Goldfields region has to offer.
