Edith River Rest Area

Free Camping - Northern Territory

This free camping area is located on both sides of the Edith River.  There are no facilities here.  Please be watchful of the crocodiles here.

Be very careful of camping at this site, particularly in the Wet Season, as the Edith River can be subject to flash flooding. In December 2011 with the remnants of Cyclone Grant dropping almost 400mm of rain at Edith Falls an ore train was partially washed off the bridge.

Despite the earlier ‘take care’ review, which is quite valid in the wet season, a picturesque site worth a stopover on your way to or from Darwin. Limited size and flat spots, but worth the stop if available during the dry months. Being in a wet season river bed, the base is mostly river rocks but all very smooth so minimal risk of punctures. Great spot for bird watchers.
