Rookys Retreat is situated in the small township of Petford, which is located approximately 80 kilometers west of the town of Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands and is on the Wheelbarrow way which ends at Chillagoe.
Rooky’s Retreat was originally set up by Mavis O’Donoghue for the Rookwood Family to have somewhere to come on weekends or for a holiday, as her Mother,Father and Grandparents had strong ties with the area of Petford and the nearby old town of Bamford.Mavis being one of the 15 siblings of the Rookwood Family who originated from the small Township of Petford, bought the old School and turned it into a family retreat.
As the Family is spread far and wide these days, and several of them have Caravans or Motorhomes , and Mavis being a member of a Motorhome Club , Mavis then decided to open her gates to other Travellers such as the Grey Nomads and other like minded people who just want somewhere to rest in their travels, and to meet other people who share the same interest.
