Merluna Station

Private Campground - Queensland

Cameron and Michelle MacLean, along with their children Sammy-Jo, Holly and Clay, welcome you to join them on their 416,000 acre cattle station on Cape York Peninsula in North Queensland.

Having bought Merluna in 2004 the MacLean family renovated the stockman's quarters into comfortable Station Stay accommodation comprising of 3 Ensuite Units, A Family Unit, 5 twin share single bed Rooms, and 15 single Donga Rooms - all air conditioned. There is also a shaded campground with a large Camp Kitchen and Recreation Shed.

There's something for everyone whether it's just to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life to listen and watch the birds and native animals in their natural environment, or kick back and relax in the peaceful, tranquil settings.

Meals are available for in house guest or Campers. They must be ordered well in advance preferably by Lunch time or earlier. They will be station type meals such as corned beef, roast beef, oxtail stew, barbecues and some old fashioned puddings like creamed rice, bread and butter custard, and steamed syrup pudding.

Special Dietary requirements need to be arranged prior to arrival, as does alcohol as we don't have a liquor licence at the moment.

Unfortunately Pets are no longer allowed at Merluna Station.

Merluna has a prolific birdlife of migrating & endemic birds that can be seen at the campground, along the rainforest encroached creek and lagoons within walking distance of your campsite.

There is also an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, dingoes, brumbies, reptiles of all sizes; such as skinks, frill necked lizards to the elusive saltwater crocodiles. The Cuscus has been seen on several occasions along the creek.

Then there's the station pets - pigs, chooks, horses, and cattle, including Norman the bullock who's unsure as to whether he's human, horse or bullock at the moment.

For the artist whether you sketch, paint or photograph there's something for everyone.

When it's time to cool off, have a swim in the above-ground pool, with its timber deck overlooking a cleared area onto the lagoon where the wallabies often come in and graze, or enjoy a friendly game of Ping Pong or Pool in the Rec Shed.

An all weather airstrip is located at the complex.

Merluna is situated 150 klms Northwest of Coen and 120klms Southeast of the bauxite mining town of Weipa. It is approx 720klm North West of Cairns (by road) and 8 klms off the Peninsula Development Road.

The Mail Plane flies into Merluna each Friday on it's Northern Mail run. They carry a limited number of passengers and is an excellent way to see a huge part of Cape York from the air. Qantas has flights into Weipa from Cairns daily, Hire Cars are available in Weipa.

Merluna has a 1000m all weather airstrip. Notification of arrival is required.

It's about a 1 hour drive from Weipa over an unsealed road and around 10 hours from Cairns, with approximately 400klms of unsealed road which can, at times, be rough.

There's a lot to see and do along the way.

Very disappointed the pool not functioning, second day no hot water, no wifi, food was not station food - we had fried fish reheated from frozen pack same as calamari potato wedges under cooked and meals were serve at 7.00 pm. Bathroom very basic. Won’t be back
