Discovery Parks - Cradle Mountain

Caravan Park - Tasmania

You need to see it to believe it - Cradle Mountain is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Discovery Parks – Cradle Mountain is set on the edge of world-heritage listed Cradle Mountain Lake St. Clair National Park, so a true wilderness experience is on the doorstep of your cabin or caravan.

The famous Overland Track starts here, covering 161,000 hectares. There are guided and non-guided walks for all fitness levels, canoe tours, horseback trail rides and helicopter flights. Meet resident Tasmanian Devils. Sheffield, Burnie, Latrobe and Deloraine are about an hour away - and with another Discovery Park in nearby Devonport, Tassie is touring holiday heaven.

Due to our remote location, there is a limited supply of drinking (rain water) and washing/shower (dam water) for powered and unpowered sites. Discovery Holiday Parks recommends filling up (9 litres per person/per day) before arrival. If you are travelling with a vehicle with its own water tanks, please fill these before arriving at the park.

There are 10 Powered Sites, so bookings essential. All sites are on gravel/dirt, some very uneven & sloping. Need to be a fairly competent driver / backer to maneuver a largeish rig (>18' caravan) on to sites. Best sites Nos 6, 5, 4, 3. NOTE: whilst there are taps, the water is not drinkable unless boiled first. There is no dump point on site. Need to go down to the public Visitor Centre car park for a dump point. The amenity block is shared between campers & bunk houses so gets hectic morning & night. The location is great for a multi-day stay for access to the shuttle buses from the Visitor Centre. However there have been no improvements since we were here 6 years ago & the place is looking tired. Also given the premium price, the amenities would benefit from more frequent & more attention to detail re cleaning given the numbers of users.

Everything is still pretty much the same as the 2016 review. There are significant clearing & infrastructure works happening at the moment, looks like for additional cabins. A powered site us $85 per night, but 20% discount at $68 per night for 4 or more nights. We think it is still the most flexible option for accessing the wonderful range of walks via the NP buses taking into account the cost of fuel to stay elsewhere & driving in for day trips.
