Hellyer Gorge Rest Area

Rest Area Overnight - Tasmania

Favourite

A scenic reserve on the Waratah Highway linking the north-west and west coasts (picnic and rest area). A mountainous and heavily forested area, it is one of the most impressive sections of highway in Tasmania. Since the opening of the Guildford/Hampshire road, heavy vehicles leave the Hellyer Gorge to the more leisurely motorist, making it even more popular as a picnic area.

A number of walking tracks along the banks of the Hellyer River (near the rest area) provide a pleasant walk to refresh before journeying on.

This is a delightful small Rest Area and you have to get in early to get a spot as there is limited room. There is a picnic area behind the Rest Area and quite a few walks through the bush and along the river on both sides of the road. You are in a deep gorge with tall trees all around so solar charging is restricted. Highly recommended for an overnighter.
