The Chinese Gardens Camping Ground is situated on the Main Road approximately 2 km north of the Walhalla Township. This picturesque area on the banks of Stringer’s Creek is in the small valley farmed by Chinese market gardeners during the height of Walhalla’s gold rush in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. This is a bush camping area so amenities are limited.

Check-in between 10 am and 4 pm daily at the Museum and Gift Shop located in the Corner Shops, cnr Main Road and Church Road.

The camping ground is in two sections. Both sections are un-powered.

The South Side is suitable for 2WD vehicles, camper trailers, small camper-vans, small caravans and tents. Most sites are approximately 10 m x 7 m, with two smaller sites. Sites slope slightly, and some are a little uneven. The sites are allocated at check-in.

The access to the North Side is by 4WD only and uses a ford across Stringer’s Creek to reach the camping area. Camping spots on the north side are not reserved, so you set up your camp on the available space. This camping area gently slopes towards the creek and has limited flat spaces. The number of campers on this side is restricted.

The Amenities block has 5 suites, each with a toilet and shower. One suit is suitable for less able access. These suites are opened by a coded lock; the code will be advised at check-in. The shower requires $1 coins for each 4 minutes use. There are hot and cold water taps at the rear of the amenities with a bench under for your wash basin. The small Laundry has a washer and dryer. These require 4 x $1 coins to operate. Free electric BBQs are available in the shelter by the driveway, about 30 metres from the amenities block.

Water is from tanks only and it is recommended that it is boiled before use.

Domestic Pets are welcome under owner’s control at all times. Fires are allowed in your well made fire pit. No fires on days of Total Fire Ban. Generators are permitted between 8:00 am and 10:00 pm only.

There is NO mobile phone coverage in Walhalla. A public telephone is available on the footpath near the Walhalla General Store.

Camping Fees as at 1/9/2018:

  • Adults:$15 per night
  • Children: $ 5 per night (5 to 16 years old)
  • Under 5 yo: Free

If we had a tent, we would be happy. However, motorhomes and caravans cannot park on the grassed area and the ones that arrived before us were large and we could not find a place where were felt comfortable. So we left. No Optus nor Vodafone. Walhalla is a scenic old mining village in a steep valley, with boutique accommodation and a few touristy shops. Road in is hilly and twisty in parts, but easily enough to drive with care.

Nice location with good water very clean toilets. We were sharing place with 6 caravans, 3 campervans and 4 tent users, and there was space for a few more smaller motorhomes. It was very comfortable. There is a very pleasant walk just behind the BBQ's up to the old tramway you can follow it to the name and last it onto Walhalla.

This site is now about 500 mtrs up hill from the town ,(37.932253 146.448506 ) toilets, shade, electric BBQ, very pleasant.
