There is camping available at the Opalton Bush Park – showers and toilets are provided, as well as a sheltered BBQ area. Cost is $2 per night.

The majority of the journey is on an unsealed road.  Please ensure you are fully stocked prior to your departure from Winton.  Limited supplies are available at the Opalton Outpost store. 

Opalton is situated 123km from Winton. It is one of the largest opal fields in Queensland is known for the quality of opal mined.

Opal was first discovered here by George Cragg in 1888 and the first mine was worked in 1894. By the end of the decade there was a bustling township of 600 and Opalton became known for the enormous quantity and quality of its opal.

Notably, in 1899 the largest piece of opal ever recorded was mined from here, a pipe opal more than three metres long. Now home to a much smaller community, visitors are able to camp at the Opalton Bush Park and try their luck in the public fossicking area.

Great spot for a few quiet days of fossicking and bush camping. Really friendly locals who are only too happy to share knowledge, have a yarn or a laugh. Glenn provides free tours, tips on where and how to fossick for opals most mornings. Community get together for a drink and a yarn every afternoon at 4pm. Hot showers and toilet. Dirt road in good condition may deteriorate as the season progresses. Cost $2.50 per person per night.
