Malcolm Dam

Free Camping - Western Australia

From the GPS co-ordinated on the road, follow the dirt road for 3kms.  This dam was built in 1902 to provide fresh water for the railway network.  Today, it offers free camping for tourists and has a picnic table.  It is quite scenic here and is great for birdwatchers.

The view over the dam was magical in the evening. We were lucky enough to be there on the night of a blood moon. it was so tranquil. Basically the camping is on a slightly wider part of the road that goes on top of the earth wall making up the dam although there are other more spacious but not quite as scenic areas around the pondage. A very good freedom camp. The main negative was rubbish and toilet remains on the side of the road.

Considering the harshness of the Mulga Mallee bush land this place is a pure oasis. The Shire of Leonora have provided a large skip for rubbish and it appears everyone uses it. There are no facilities other than the skip but the water side location is well worth it. You are only 10 klms from Leonora so you get digital TV reception. To get there drive 10 klms along the road towards Laverton and then 3.5 klms on a fairly smooth dirt road to the dam and pick a site. If there is any risk of rain keep your rig hitched and facing the road out as the area can get very Boggy if it is wet.
