Mt Field National Park Campground

National Park - Tasmania

Favourite

Also known as Land of the Giants Caravan Park. It is located at Mt Field National Park, southern Tasmania. It is just over one hour’s drive west of Hobart.

Camping and caravan facilities are available near the park entrance. The campground is set in a pleasant forest by the Tyenna River. It has excellent facilities, including 14 powered sites, unpowered sites, a toilet and shower block with coin-operated washing machines and clothes driers and a communal cooking shelter with free electric barbeques and sink with hot water.

The Visitor Centre at the entrance of the park provides information on walks as well as comprehensive interpretation of the history, geology, plants and animals of the park. It's a great place to start your day and to learn more about the special features of the park.

The Visitor Centre also has disabled access toilets and an independently operated café and shop.

Great peaceful national park camp ground with 14 powered sites (with hook on water) and numerous bays and other areas for unpowered. Only a small number of spots are suitable for large rigs (dodging other campers cars is a bit tricky). During the peak season there are volunteer campground hosts who take payment and assist with site selection. Otherwise pay at the visitor centre. Best to arrive around 10 am to 12 noon for the best chance at a site. Amenity block is very clean and adequate with hot showers. No dump point. For tents, beware the grassed central area under gums along creek. We saw a large limb fall and tear a tent. $20 per night powered, $16 unpowered. Need a National Park Vehicle Pass.

Great facilities considering one is in a NP. Clean amenities block, recycling bins, shelters, table and chairs. We took a powered site due to temperature and it had hook on water, drain outlet and power connection all in one corner. Many walks to waterfalls to be done from campground with clear signage. Self guided walk at night to see glow worms.

Camping under the giant trees beside the quietly running river. We chose the unpowered area and backed up to the trees that are on the verge of the River. It was very crowded in the powered area with large caravans taking most of the area. Well maintained showers and toilets. Nearby are the walks in the forest and to the waterfalls. Nearby road takes you to the lake and the winter snow. The info building has a Cafe restaurant if you dont want to cook.
