This is an ok spot to stop. It certainly fills up later in the afternoon and after one night we are a little tired because of some idiot backpackers who thought it was a great idea to have a huge fire and then others joined in with loud noise (they’d call it music but it was horrible) eventually they nodded off and it was relatively quiet for a few hours. Unfortunately many of the authorised free camps are becoming congested with lay abouts and no hopers which does become problematic for the quieter grey nomads when travelling.
Babinda itself is a lovely little town and very welcoming of our money. I always support a town which supports us. It is however sad to see those who contribute nothing yet take all they can at the same time as showing no respect for fellow travellers.
Would stop again but try to find a spot along the north eastern side furthest away from the backpackers and car dwellers.
Fabulous large solid bitumen surface area for free camping with lawns around edge 72 hours coin operated Hot Showers unisex and disabled.
Freshwater creek alongside, good for a swim, tables BBQ toilets bins Dump Point even 2 sinks for dish washing. Quiet and away from the highway and noise of trains surrounded by a fringe of bush. A credit to the Cairns Council and Babinda town which is close by for all you need shopping pub meals, hair dresser etc.
You must now book online, arrive before 6pm and leave before 10am, 72 hour max stay, 14days between stays
Strange info. Says campground is closed then says to camp at Babinda, however this is the campground at Babinda?
Found on another site the camp is closed until the 22nd October 2018
This is not closed see photo added today.
Great 72 hr free stop. No bookings required. Donation box. $2 hot showers. Clean toilets & dump pt. Has 2 taps to fill water tanks.Walk to town which has all shops. On a crystal clear river which is shallow but can swim in it. Gets busy after lunch. Alittle hwy & train noise but not too bad.
Great place to stay, plenty of spaces shaded and full sun. Easy walk in the town with cafes, pubs and grocer.
$2 for 4 minute hot shower. Fresh water and dump point available.
Fine stopping place for up to three nights at a time..
We were there in July and it was more of less full. The grass around the sides of the paved surface was chopped up by heavy tyres, caused by the recent rain.
The site is a short walk into the village where can be found all the shops needed. A large opp shop was interesting. Gas refills at the hardware shop.
